The best of Oporto

Pedro IV

Considered by many like the heart of the city of Oporto, Plaça da Liberdade has been crowned by the statue of king Pedro IV (1834), also known as Peter I de Brasil from 1822 until 1831. From the north part of the square the famous Avenue divides two Allied Forces, a big avenue constructed between 1923 and 1929.

This building constructed between the XIIth and XIIIth centuries, is composed by a structure of Romanesque style, but remodeled in the baroque epoch. Its front is still preserved by its aspect of church fortified with battlements. This cathedral was reconstructed almost completely in the S. XVII and XVIII, maintaining most of its character of fortitude. The interior of the cathedral is principally of Romanesque style, with large number of altars hornamentados, including the main altar of beginning of the S. XVIII.

In the cathedral we can find the image of Nossa Senhora of Vendoma (XIVth Century), boss of the city of Oporto, the famous “altar of silver”, important cloister of Gothic style, the chapel of San Vicente, a noble staircase for which one gains access to the top courtyard of the Gothic cloister, and of course, he emphasizes the treasure of the Cathedral, formed by 150 objects of cult, clothings and liturgical books that date between the S. XIV and XIX.

It is a question of one of the most visited monuments of Oporto. National monument that belongs and serves like head office of the Trade association of the Oporto. Half of the S belongs to 2nd. XIX and it is constructed in neoclassic style. He emphasizes its famous Arab Lounge. 

 

Estaçao San BentoEstaçao of San Bento:

This building takes its name of the street in which it is placed. Of recent construction, in 1935, it is house was designed by designers and decorators of recognized artistic reputation with the intention of constructing residential spaces in the style of the 30s, but due to the difficulties that the Second World War interposed, the work was finished by the architect portuense Marquess gives Miscellany in the 40s. The result has been a construction in style “Art Decó“, example of national town planning, in which architectural and landscape taste they coexist in perfect harmony.

At present the building belongs to the Portuguese State, which acquired it in 1987 across the State Department for the Culture, in order to establish a Modern Art museum in Oporto. The architect Álvaro Siza Vieira was the manager of realizing the rehabilitation of the building in museum and auditorium. At present he can go to visit this museum that lodges a collection of diverse pieces of Portuguese and foreign contemporary art, belonging to state collections, donations and procurement.

Bridges:

One of the images most representative of Oporto there are the scenery that its bridges shape, seven in its entirety and that frame the step of the river Douro along the city. Wine vaults:

Other of the biggest attractions of the city of Oporto there are the wine vaults in which there are prepared its famous wines that receive the same name as the city. These wine vaults are to another side of the Douro, in the area known as Vila Nova of Gaia. Most of these open its doors for the tourism and you have routes guided in different languages.
